The Detail is proud to announce the launch of the No Stone Unturned Journalism Fellowship.
This fellowship is dedicated to providing support for a journalist over the course of a year to pursue issues arising out of the landmark 2017 documentary, “No Stone Unturned” and the subsequent arrest of Barry McCaffrey and Trevor Birney.
Investigative reporter Cormac Kehoe will be the first fellow. Cormac has written for a number of outlets including the Guardian, the Observer, and the BBC.
Following the landmark ruling that the PSNI and Metropolitan Police had conducted unlawful surveillance on The Detail editor Trevor Birney and former Detail journalist Barry McCaffrey, the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) awarded £4,000 each to the two journalists.
Half that money has been donated towards this fellowship, and the other half to the east Belfast Irish language project Turas.
Announcing the fellowship, Barry McCaffrey said:
“Trevor and myself firmly believe that independent, investigative journalism is essential in not only holding institutions to proper scrutiny but also restoring public confidence at a time of widespread distrust.
“Having benefited from such support early in our careers, we’re delighted to help Cormac and the next generation of truth-tellers.”
The fellowship is designed to sustain high-quality investigative stories that might otherwise go uncovered due to lack of resources.
It will support a journalist who wishes to examine legacy issues but also highlight the threat to journalism from state surveillance.
Families of victims continue to seek answers, justice, and accountability, while the search for truth remains fraught with obstacles. Many still question whether the new Troubles legacy bodies have the will or ability to uncover the full scope of the injustices that occurred during the conflict.
Investigative journalism thus remains a crucial tool for revealing the facts that have been obscured by years of cover-ups, political maneuvering, and institutional inertia.
The Detail is an award-winning platform that supports both written journalism and multimedia content, including documentary, film and podcasts.
